Workshop 2: Beginning Sumi-e: Chrysanthemums

SUPPLY LIST

Participants are expected to bring their own materials:

• Several bamboo brushes, including at least two large bamboo brushes

• Craft felt to place under the paper

• Paper towels or rags

• A medium-sized (approximately 6-inch) seven-well flower palette—porcelain is recommended—and/or three or more small plain porcelain plates

• An ink stone and ink stick and/or a good-quality bottle of liquid sumi ink

• Two water bowls: one for clean water and diluting sumi, and one for cleaning brushes

• Hanshi (Japanese rice paper) for practice; newsprint may be substituted if Hanshi is unavailable

• Paperweight(s)

• A pen or pencil for taking notes

• Watercolors or a 12-color set of Japanese Gansai colors

• Shikishi boards

The “Four Treasures of Sumi-e: Materials Lecture” workshop is designed to help participants understand the tools and materials used in sumi-e and choose appropriate supplies. Attending this workshop and purchasing the necessary materials afterward is strongly recommended.

For participants who are unable to attend the materials lecture or, due to unavoidable circumstances, cannot prepare their own supplies, the instructor can provide materials for an additional $40 materials fee, payable directly to the instructor. This includes the use of loaner brushes, a felt mat, a palette, and shared sumi ink and colors, as well as practice paper and a shikishi board. Participants may take home the artworks they create on the paper and shikishi.

This service is available only by advance arrangement. Participants must contact the instructor at sumi-e@fumiyo-y.comno later than eight days before the workshop. Materials cannot be provided without advance notice.
