Akiko Suzuki:
is a textile and mixed media artist living in California, U.S.A.

In 1986 Akiko Suzuki graduated in visual design from Kyoto College of the Arts where she studied photography, video and three-dimensional production.

Suzuki started making quilts in 1990 and has won numerous art quilt awards both domestically and internationally and has been collected all over the world.

Since 2014, she has participated in Global Art Project co-founded  with Carl Heyward.

She has co-facxilitated  art residencies including group exhibitions, solo and collaborative studio practice and workshops in Italy, USA, Mexico and Senegal.

Suzuki's works express poetry and the intangible, invisible things; thoughts and skin sensations become words and images

This intuitive work, like a novel, is born from everyday life and the words spring from her flood of images becoming poetry reflected in the title of the work. The expression of these emotions also extends to photography and video.

Her works are visualized as abstractions via sumi ink, paint, collage, fiber and textile art. Her solo exhibition SONGS OF A LITTLE BIRD is scheduled for July 2026 at NY2CA Gallery in Benicia, Ca

Faces & Figures With Charlynn Throckmorton

Faces & Figures:

A Two Day Workshop with Charlynn Throckmorton

November 8 & 15
10-4pm

$325

This two-day workshop is designed to introduce beginning to intermediate artists to painting faces and figures using reference photos. Over the course of the workshop, participants will develop a solid understanding of facial and figure proportions and learn how to construct them effectively.

The first day will focus on portraits, where students will create a self-portrait using charcoal as their primary medium. Techniques involving charcoal, graphite, and other dry media will be explored, offering a strong foundation in drawing before moving into paint. On the second day, attention will shift to full figure painting, allowing participants to apply their skills in a broader context.

Participants are required to bring willow and vine charcoal, a mixed media sketchbook, and graphite drawing pencils. No prior experience is necessary, making this workshop accessible to artists at varying skill levels. Throughout the sessions, Charlynn will be available to provide ongoing feedback and guidance. Each day will conclude with a group critique and sharing session to encourage learning and artistic growth.

Inspired by a leaning toward abstraction in her own work, Charlynn incorporates this influence into the curriculum, offering a fresh perspective on traditional figure and portrait work. Examples and portfolios of relevant artwork will be provided for reference and inspiration.

Class size is limited to six participants to ensure personalized attention. After the workshop, follow-up resources and support will be made available to help students continue their artistic development.

By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a completed charcoal self-portrait and a figurative painting, equipped with new skills and confidence in faces and figure painting.

Cost is $325 for both days. Painting materials and lunch  will be provided.

Any questions, contact Charlynn: 707-361-5920.

Carl Heyward's Push/Practice Workshop

Carl Heyward and Akiko Suzuki’s PUSH/PRACTICE WORKSHOP
Sunday, OCTOBER 12
12 - 3 pm
$215

“If it gives pleasure or comfort, it is Art; if it instructs and enlightens, it is Art; if it confuses, is clever or clarifies, it is Art. The platform or delivery system, be it literary, culinary, educational, 2D, 3D, digital, electronic, Facebook, childbirth, or of the plastic ‘arts’ is the only thing that differentiates one from the other. Still, each, nonetheless, is to be respected and regarded as valuable vehicles of experience or existence.”

Carl Heyward (excerpt from Tapas K. Ray's The Antonym Webzine's article below)

Carl Heyward is NEA Fellow and grant recipient, former MFA instructor at SF Academy of Art University, arts writer and founder of Global Art Project, a mixed-media collaborative cooperative with a membership in 12 countries. He has exhibited at Room Art Gallery, Mill Valley, The Fourth Wall Gallery in Oakland, CA, artist-in-residence at The Schools of The Sacred Heart at The Flood Mansion, San Francisco, and continues to exhibit internationally: Kranz, Slovenia; Mazatlan, Mexico; Venice, Italy; and Ghent, Belgium, in 2017-2019. His work is in collections held by SF-MOMA, NY-MOMA, Yale University Art Library, the National Gallery of Australia, Wellsely Art Library and the Brooklyn Museum. He is associated with Jennifer Perlmutter Gallery, CA; 10dence Gallery, Holland, Galerie Sobo Bade, Senegal and Gallerie Renee Marie, CA, East Village Art View Gallery, NYC

Carl was The Antonym Webzine’s Artist of the Month (August 2021). Read this enlightening article as Carl articulates "what Art is" here:
